The
Center-South Columbus Deanery

Mission Statement: To determine the needs and the assets of the ten
Center-South Columbus Deanery parishes … to inspire, educate and minister to all
Center-South Columbus parishioners … and to spread the word throughout the
entire Diocese of the unique ministry of our churches.
The 106 parishes in the Diocese of Columbus are divided into fifteen separate
geographic clusters … Deaneries. The Deanery Councils of the Diocese consist of
representatives from each of its parishes and are assigned the task of
discussing and planning strategies for maximizing the strengths of their
parishes and minimizing their weaknesses through collaboration and through
clustering. The results of their work are then passed onto the Bishop through
the Diocesan Pastoral Council.
The Deanery Council meets a minimum of bi-monthly but usually meets on a monthly
basis at the Diocesan Catholic Center. During the first year they were seated,
they worked extensively on the Bishop’s Self-Study Program which was introduced
to the entire Diocese in 2008.
Saint Joseph Cathedral is a member of the Center-South Columbus Deanery, which
is made up of the ten parishes that are geographically located closest to the
center-city area. The Council is made up of its Dean (Father Michael Gribble),
the Pastors of the other nine parishes and two representatives from each parish
in the group. Currently, serving as the Cathedral’s Council Members are Carol
Engler (614/885-3943) and Michael Elton (614/405-7770). Anyone interested in
more information regarding the Deanery Council may contact either of our
Members. Anyone who feels they would enjoy the challenge and reward of becoming
a Deanery Council Member should contact our Rector, Father Gribble through the
Rectory office.
