R.C.I.A. Adult Sponsors Needed
If
you are looking for a way to become more active in the Cathedral parish
family, we suggest becoming a sponsor for the candidates in our RCIA
process. Sponsors need not be experts about Catholicism.
Their primary responsibility is to walk beside the candidates in their
journey to full initiation in the Catholic Church and to model Christian
kindness and love. Please join us on Wednesday, August 21, 2002, in
the undercroft at 7:00 p.m. to learn more details about this vital
parish ministry. This is an opportunity to explore a way to answer your
baptismal call to share your time and talents for the growth and good of
the parish.
Inquiry Sessions Begin for R.C.I.A.
If you
are not a member of the Roman Catholic Faith but would like to know more
about Catholicism or maybe you would like to explore the possibility of
becoming Catholic, join the R.C.I.A. team in the undercroft after the
10:30 AM Mass on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each
month. The period of
inquiry is a perfect time to ask questions about what it means to be
Catholic and to discover Church teachings as well as finding out what the
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is all about. You
can also visit our R.C.I.A. page online by
clicking here.

DIRECTOR FOR ST. JOSEPH CATHEDRAL:
Xavier Harrison
is our new PSR Director. Xavier has been a parishioner for 9 years. He
and his wife Sherry have four children: Taylor, age 7; Kenedi, age 5;
Xavier III, age 2; and their newest addition is Demera, age 1 month.
Xavier is active in the RCIA and holds the position of Vice President in
the Parish Council. Sherry is active as a PSR teacher as well as being
active with the parish council also. Xavier’s goals for his position as

Parish Picnic a Success!
The Parish Picnic was a total success! God blessed us with good
weather to enjoy our day. There was great food, fun, (even bubbles), music
and conversation. Father Mike and the Cathedral Staff wish to thank
everyone for working so hard to make this social event a joyous one.
Let’s look forward to planning and participating in next year’s picnic.

We Need Your
Help
PLEASE DO NOT GIVE MONEY TO THE STREET PEDDLERS
loitering on the steps and the back alley of the Cathedral before and after
Mass! Giving money to the peddles is a very dangerous situation that
entices them to return, but is a problem for those who work at the Cathedral
Square on a regular basis. Not only does the Cathedral, but services in
the immediate area provide food, clothing, housing, and advice for job
allocation to these people.
A NOTE FROM FATHER
MIKE: Perhaps some clarification is needed about the
bulletin announcement asking you not to give to the “panhandlers” around the
Cathedral. The fact is that many that beg are not homeless but hustlers. At
the Cathedral, we provide sandwiches and a fruit twice a day, seven days a
week. We provide fuel vouchers for travelers who get stranded and we give a
monthly donation to the YMCA in order to help the homeless. In the office
behind the Cathedral is the JOIN office. They provide help to persons who might
be having trouble paying utility bills; getting food, clothing, or medicine.
We do a great deal to help the poor and the homeless but many of those begging
on the weekend want the money for alcohol or drugs. To give them money is to
help contribute to their early death. If some of you want to do more for the
poor and the homeless, I suggest that you get involved with our
St. Vincent de
Paul Society. It is a parish organization that is committed to helping the
poor. I hope this clears up some misconceptions. -Father
