Cathedral Concerts 2003-2004

Sunday, October 19, 2003            7:30 p.m.            The House of God and the Gate of Heaven
This day marks the 125th anniversary of the dedication of Saint Joseph Cathedral. Join the Cathedral Choir and Schola, Cathedral Brass, and Bishop Griffin for Solemn Evening Prayer and a concert featuring Giovanni Gabrieli's In ecclesiis and other music celebrating our magnificent house of worship.

Sunday, November 9, 2003           7:30 p.m.            Organ Concerto Concert
Organist Mark Herris, a doctoral candidate in organ performance at Indiana University, joins members of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in George Frideric Handel's famous Concerto in F, Op. 4, No. 4. Works by Mozart and others will also be featured. Mr. Herris will explore the colors of the stunning new choir organ constructed by Toronto builder Halbert Gober.

Sunday, December 14, 2003            7:30 p.m.            Let the Heavens Rejoice!
The Cathedral Choir and Schola, along with the Cathedral Brass offers their popular annual Lessons and Carols for Advent. Andrea Gabrieli's Magnificat for antiphonal choirs and brass ensembles will be on the program, along with thrilling settings of carols for the season.

Friday, March 19, 2004            7:30 p.m.            Of Saints and Angels: Visions of Heaven
On this Feast of Saint Joseph, the Cathedral Choir will perform a two part program. The first will explore repertoire dealing with saints, angels, and the heavenly Jerusalem. Included on this first half will be William Harris's famous Faire is the Heaven. The second half will be a complete performance of Frank Martin's Messe for double choir. This work has come to be known as a benchmark for fine choirs all over the world.

Friday, April 9, 2004            8:00 p.m.            Office of Tenebrae
The Cathedral Schola chants the psalms and sings other works for the Office of Tenebrae on this darkest of nights. The central work on this night is Thomas Tallis's Lamentations of Jeremiah. The gradual extinction of all lights in the Cathedral symbolizes the temporary triumph of the prince of darkness over the Light of the World, and the loud noise, or strepitus, at the conclusion of the office suggests the earthquake described in the Passion narratives. A single candle left burning is the symbol and promise of Christ's triumph over death and darkness.

Sunday, April 25, 2004           3:00 p.m.             The Lancaster Chorale: There is Sweet Music
The Lancaster Chorale, directed by Robert Trocchia, performs Russian anthems and hymns, plus works by Jacobus Gallus, Jackson Berkey, Frank Martin, Edward Elgar, and local composer Tim Sarsany.

The Lancaster Chorale

Saint Joseph Cathedral is proud to have the Lancaster Chorale as the choral ensemble in residence. Widely considered one of Central Ohio's premiere choral ensembles, the Lancaster Chorale has performed in the Cathedral regularly in recent seasons. Admission for this concert is $12.00. Advance tickets may be purchased at the Cathedral Bookshop on E. Gay Street, or by calling 614-221-6981. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Sunday, May 2, 2004           7:30 p.m.             Donor Concert
All those who give to Cathedral Concerts at the Friends level or higher will be invited to this evening of music performed in the intimate setting of the Cathedral apse. The Cathedral Schola and soloists will sing choral works of the Renaissance and later periods, followed by a reception for all our faithful donors. Donors are encouraged to invite guests they feel will be interested in supporting the mission of Cathedral Concerts.

You can play a part . . .

The Cathedral Concerts Series enjoys a reputation in the greater Columbus area for providing varied concerts and recitals that edify audiences musically and spiritually. The 2002-2003 season promises to fulfill the expectations of our audiences with offerings by many of the most talented local and national musicians performing great works in the magnificent setting of Saint Joseph Cathedral. In keeping with its mission of excellence, the Cathedral is pleased to continue its association with the Lancaster Chorale as the Chorale Ensemble in Residence. Through this program, the Cathedral Concerts patrons have the opportunity to experience one of Central Ohio's premiere choral ensembles, and the Chorale is able to perform, rehearse, and record in the Cathedral.

Cathedral Concerts are an outgrowth of the vibrant liturgical music program that is supported by the Cathedral parish. However, Cathedral Concerts are funded solely through generous donations by the friends of Cathedral Concerts. Cathedral Concerts receive no direct financial support from the Cathedral parish or the Diocese of Columbus, and must operate within a balanced budget each year. The cost of great music, like all worthwhile art, is considerable. This is why we seek your help. Your monetary gifts protect the financial stability of the series and ensure that high caliber performances will continue.

We invite your participation and support at whatever level and in whatever way you can help promote, sustain, and develop this important outreach ministry of Saint Joseph Cathedral. As an incentive to our generous donors, we will host a special concert at the end of the season in their honor. This is the way the Cathedral and its musicians thank all those who make Cathedral Concerts possible. Please consider contributing to Cathedral Concerts at the Friend ($25-$99), Donor ($100-499), Sustainer ($500-$999), or Benefactor ($1000 or more) level.

In addition to contributing financially to the support of this year’s Cathedral Concerts, there are many other ways in which you can assist both the concert and liturgical music programs at the Cathedral, including providing volunteer assistance by ushering and assisting at concerts, assisting with fund raising and development, sponsorship of a specific concert as a memorial or honorary gift, support for recording projects and touring, contributing to help cover the costs of music or instrumentalists for major feast days, or contributions to maintenance of organs and other instruments.
