Cathedral Concerts 2002-2003

Sunday, October 13            3:00 p.m.            All Franck
The organ works of César Franck (1822-1890) hold a revered position in the repertoire. His architectural approach to structure couples with a rich harmonic texture to create compositions of supreme beauty. Cathedral Organists Dorothy Riley and Paul Thornock share the program and perform the Priere and Franck's famous and final utterance, the Trois Chorals. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be accepted to support the mission of Cathedral Concerts.

Sunday, November 3            7:30 p.m.            Duruflé Centenary
2002 is the one-hundredth anniversary of the birth of French composer Maurice Duruflé. Craig Cramer, Professor of Organ at the University of Notre Dame and internationally acclaimed concert organist and recording artist, returns to Columbus to join the Cathedral Choir in a program of chant-based works including the Quatre Motets and the hauntingly beautiful Requiem. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be accepted.

Sunday, December 15            3:00 p.m.            Christmas at the Cathedral
The Cathedral Choir and Schola join forces with the Lancaster Chorale, the Cathedral's Choral Ensemble in Residence, to perform this annual concert of Advent and Christmas Music. The music of Samuel Scheidt, Herbert Howells, Leo Nestor, David Willcocks and others will be featured. The Cathedral Brass will share in the festivities that will include opportunities for the audience to join the choirs in music of the season. A suggested donation of $10.00 will be collected at the door.

Sunday, February 16            3:00 p.m.            Concerto Spirituale
Violinist Rhonda Frascotti and Flutist Robert Frascotti will be joined by friends from the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in a concert of works by Bach and Vivaldi. Vivaldi's Concerto in D Major for two violins and orchestra, Bach's Trio Sonata in C Major (BWV 1032), and Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 will be on the program. Cathedral Director of Music, Paul Thornock, will play the French double harpsichord donated to the Cathedral in 2000. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be accepted to support the mission of Cathedral Concerts.

Sunday, March 30            3:00 p.m.            Hear My Prayer, O Lord
The Cathedral Choir and Schola perform their annual concert of music for Lent and Holy Week. The Saint Joseph Cathedral Choir is comprised of approximately 30 professional and volunteer singers from throughout the Metropolitan Columbus area and beyond. The choir's reputation for musical excellence has taken it to the cathedrals of Cincinnati and Cleveland for special performances at the Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedral Musicians and to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame. The members of the Cathedral schola are drawn from the Cathedral Choir and specialize in the interpretation of early music. The program will include choral settings of the six penitential psalms by Brahms, Purcell, and others. There is no admission fee for this annual event, but a freewill offering will be accepted to support the mission of Cathedral Concerts.

Friday, April 18            8:00 p.m.             The Office of Tenebrae
The Cathedral Schola chants the psalms and sings other works for the Office of Tenebrae on this darkest of nights. The gradual extinction of all lights in the Cathedral symbolizes the temporary triumph of the prince of darkness over the Light of the World, and the loud noise, or strepitus, at the conclusion of the office suggests the earthquake described in the Passion narratives. A single candle left burning is the symbol and promise of Christ's triumph over death and darkness.

Sunday, May 4            7:30 p.m.             Donor Concert
All those who give to Cathedral Concerts at the Friends level or higher will be invited to this afternoon of music performed in the intimate setting of the Cathedral apse. The Cathedral Schola and soloists will sing choral works of the Renaissance and later periods, followed by a reception for all our faithful donors. Donors are encouraged to invite guests they feel will be interested in supporting the mission of Cathedral Concerts.

You can play a part . . .

The Cathedral Concerts Series enjoys a reputation in the greater Columbus area for providing varied concerts and recitals that edify audiences musically and spiritually. The 2002-2003 season promises to fulfill the expectations of our audiences with offerings by many of the most talented local and national musicians performing great works in the magnificent setting of Saint Joseph Cathedral. In keeping with its mission of excellence, the Cathedral is pleased to continue its association with the Lancaster Chorale as the Chorale Ensemble in Residence. Through this program, the Cathedral Concerts patrons have the opportunity to experience one of Central Ohio's premiere choral ensembles, and the Chorale is able to perform, rehearse, and record in the Cathedral.

Cathedral Concerts are an outgrowth of the vibrant liturgical music program that is supported by the Cathedral parish. However, Cathedral Concerts are funded solely through generous donations by the friends of Cathedral Concerts. Cathedral Concerts receive no direct financial support from the Cathedral parish or the Diocese of Columbus, and must operate within a balanced budget each year. The cost of great music, like all worthwhile art, is considerable. This is why we seek your help. Your monetary gifts protect the financial stability of the series and ensure that high caliber performances will continue.

We invite your participation and support at whatever level and in whatever way you can help promote, sustain, and develop this important outreach ministry of Saint Joseph Cathedral. As an incentive to our generous donors, we will host a special concert at the end of the season in their honor. This is the way the Cathedral and its musicians thank all those who make Cathedral Concerts possible. Please consider contributing to Cathedral Concerts at the Friend ($25-$99), Donor ($100-499), Sustainer ($500-$999), or Benefactor ($1000 or more) level.
