CATHEDRAL MUSIC 2005-2006
2006 february 26 Sunday, 7:30 p.m.
Renaissance Radiance
Saint Joseph Cathedral Choir
Renaissance polyphony forms the core of the
Cathedral Choir’s repertoire. As the centerpiece of this
program, the Choir will perform William Byrd’s Mass for Five Voices (1595).
As a Catholic musician in England when it was not popular to be so,
Byrd’s Masses and Gradualia demonstrate that the art of music
could not be crushed, even in the face of great adversity. A free-will
offering will be accepted.
2006 may 7 Sunday, 7:30 p.m.
Cathedral Donor Concert
All those who give to Cathedral Concerts at the
Friends level or higher will be invited to this evening of music
performed in the intimate setting of the Cathedral apse. The
Cathedral Schola and soloists will sing choral works of the Renaissance
and later periods, followed by a reception for all our faithful donors.
Donors are encouraged to invite guests they feel will be
interested in supporting the mission of Cathedral Concerts.
2006 april 14 Good Friday, 8:00 p.m.
Tenebrae Saint Joseph Cathedral schola
The Cathedral Schola chants the psalms and sings
other works for the Office of Tenebrae on this darkest of nights,
including Thomas Tallis’s Lamentation
of Jeremiah. The gradual extinction
of all lights in the Cathedral symbolizes the temporary tri-umph of the
prince of darkness over the Light of the World, and the loud noise, or strepitus, at the conclusion
of the office suggests the earthquake described in the Passion
narratives. A single candle left burning is the symbol and promise of
Christ’s triumph over death and darkness. The evening concludes
with a performance of Gregorio Allegri’s famous Miserere in a
completely darkened cathedral. Freewill offering.

You Can Play A Part...
The cost of presenting our series is beyond the
resources of the Cathedral to support on its own. We rely on your
generosity in helping to make programs such as this a continuing part
of the spiritual and cultural enrichment of our city.
The Cathedral Concerts Series enjoys a reputation
in the greater Columbus area for providing varied concerts and recitals
that edify audiences musically and spiritually. The 2004-2005 season
promises to fulfill the expectations of our audiences with offerings by
many of the most talented local and national musicians performing great
works in the magnificent setting of Saint Joseph Cathedral.
We invite your participation and support at
whatever level and in whatever way you can help promote, sustain, and
develop this important outreach ministry of Saint Joseph Cathedral. As
an incentive to our generous donors, we will host a special concert at
the end of the season in their honor. This is the way the Cathedral and
its musicians thank all those who make Cathedral Concerts possible.
In addition to contributing financially to the
support of this year’s Cathedral Concerts, there are many other
ways in which you can assist both the concert and liturgical music
programs at the Cathedral, including providing volunteer assistance by
ushering and assisting at concerts, assisting with fund raising and
development, sponsorship of a specific concert as a memorial or
honorary gift, support for recording projects and touring, contributing
to help cover the costs of music or instrumentalists for major feast
days, or contributions to maintenance of organs and other instruments.
