Saint Joseph Cathedral's Web Site Design: Homepage
-
The homepage and web site was designed with Microsoft FrontPage
2000 and 2002. Adobe Photoshop 5.5 was used for the graphics,
including the Saint Joseph Cathedral red font wording for the top border.
-
The web site uses a top and bottom shared borders. The
top border has the Saint Joseph Cathedral wording and some graphics.
The border also includes navigation links to what is deemed the most
commonly used links by visitors and parishioners.
-
The bottom shared border displays how many visitors have
been to the web site. Although the display of hit counters is not
something that is normally displayed on professional web sites, it helps
certain members of the Cathedral staff to easily track the number of
visitors without having to go into the web site host's data menu to see this
information.
-
The homepage is designed to show two things that are
separated by HTML tables: a list of the clergy on the left (static
information) and news (more dynamic information) on the right. The
goal is to design the web site so that most news (e.g., Cathedral
concerts) have a time window where the web site would automatically show
this data. Once the time frame/window expires, the data could be
replaced with newer news or generic news. FrontPage has the capability
to do this insertion and removal of data based upon time.
-
Visitors that use Internet Explorer 5.0 or above will see an
icon in their Favorites menu. The icon is the diocese of Columbus and
appears by putting the icon in the root directory with the name "favicon.ico."
Internet Explorer uses this filename as the default for a Favorite menu
icon.
IMPORTANT! To make changes with
Microsoft FrontPage 2002, you must publish to the following URL:
http://saintjosephcathedral.org
without the www prefix. Do not publish to
http://www.saintjosephcathedral.org as this will not work.
If you FTP (File Transfer Protocol) files to the web site, here are the
settings to use (for a FTP program such as WS_FTP LE):
Note: FTP application FS_FTP did not display all the
directories on the web server (reason unknown). Bulletproof FTP did
show all the directories. IWAYNET.NET is the web host (server). Their phone
number is (614) 294-9292. They had to remove FrontPage 2002 server
extensions on December 11, 2001 due to some bugs. So the current site
has FrontPage 2000 server extensions. If FP 2002 extensions need to be
installed (e.g., for items like the photo gallery in FP 2002, but not in FP
2000), then give Iwaynet.net a call. Matt (full-time) is a good
contact as is Steve (part-time; Steve helped with the server extensions on
December 11, 2001). E-mail addresses have been set-up with
the saintjosephcathedral.org domain. Iwaynet was contacted via e-mail
(support@iwaynet.net) to create and
forward the following e-mail addresses (as of 3/6/02):
